Hello, Stranger: An inside look of the true potential of "Anonymous"
Anonymity. A concept that is essentially non-existent online. Even the most insignificant information leaves an “electronic trail” to which the author can be traced back to. With nearly all information available is present on the internet, it is difficult to keep anything hidden. Where then can we go to share information and ideas in a truly anonymous fashion? It seems an online forum called “4chan” is the closest we can get. By posting anonymously, leaving nothing but an IP address to only the highest of administrators, it opens up a boundary-less floor for discussion and sharing of ideas and opinions for everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality, or any other traits that may cause even the most minor segregation. The power of anonymous brings different parts of the globe together to form a master hub of information and abilities for those willing to give and receive it. However, with this same power, come those who wish to abuse it. Terrorist threats, cyber-bullying, and questionable content are present as well on these forums, and with no form of regulation, it is difficult to monitor when and where these posts originate. Does this form of communication benefit us in the long run? Or does it have the potential to severely damage the online society? Does this form of Anarchy work in the cyber-community? To decide this, I invite you to a more detailed look into the history, capabilities, and consequences, of 4chan.
