What is a narrative?

In Abbott's reading, he discusses Frederic Jameson's description of a narrative as the "central function or instance for human kind." Later in his passage, Abbott continues to state that a narrative is the "principal way in which our species organizes its understanding of time." Overall, it seems as though society uses the idea of narrative to create the everyday story of life. It is a very vague term, as stated by the authors, but "story" is a basic part of narrative. Narrative is a large part in the way society communicates. Communication links media to narrative as well.
