How Technology has changed Language: From “You” 2 “u” and “to” to “2”
Technology and language are two things that are continuously changing and advancing, which raises the question of whether or not the two topics are related. The purpose of this research paper is to find how technology has influenced the English language. In addition, it is to find out how it is changing our society. The methods in which this will be done are by looking at academic sources to find information on this topic and then comparing the findings. The majority of the academic sources used are written by professors at universities all over the globe, who have studied topics related to this one. One source, by Sheelah Sweeny, deals with how teachers deal with students who use text language instead of proper language. Another source, published by the British Psychological Society, states the grades of students who use text abbreviations regularly and the relationship between the two (Plester). The technology covered in this paper will range from texting on cell phones to using instant messenger or Facebook chat on computers. The findings of this investigation prove that technology has influenced language in a number of ways, the most important way being that it has made our society act less intelligent due to the high amount of use of improper language.
