Hello,
My name is Kayla Fisher-Poling, I am a junior majoring in Human Development. I took two semesters of German with Anne-Marie Fischer and she had given us information on this class. After hearing about what would be read and discussed, I was very intrigued. I decided to take this class during winter break because it did not fit into my schedule during the regular fall and spring semesters.
From elementary school and on, I have been reading my local newspaper every morning. What was once a sit down breakfast splitting the News and the Sports sections with my father, is now a pre-cursor to checking my e-mail while still lying in bed--but not before checking facebook. Reading the news online has become a common habit for many, but I believe it takes away from it all.
In the past, I have been active on various forums, as well as Twitter and Facebook. These sources have helped me keep in contact with friends from all 50 US states and even friends throughout the rest of the world--Sweden, Canada, Australia, etc. The internet brings people together, but it can also drive people apart. It is a whirlwind of information, yet not all of the information is truthful. It allows many to hide behind their keyboards with no fear.
I am hoping for this class to show me another view of global media and how it varies throughout the world. What one may use as a source of news, another may have no knowledge of.
-Kayla
