Throw it on the Back Burner

It really surprises me that in such an advanced country as the US, such big issues such as HIV and AIDS barely make it into the media anymore. Just because the problem is not as widespread as it is in South Africa doesn’t mean it is not important. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but we often hear people make rude comments that AIDS is here because of black people or gay people. These thoughts are ridiculous. A great visual that was shown in this video was a poster that read “HIV does not discriminate.” We are all equally susceptible to receiving and passing along HIV. If Americans continue to be ignorant, the problem could become just as widespread as other countries.

I think the reality show that South Africa has created is a great idea and could be very beneficial. Instead of having ridiculous “reality TV” shows of drunken college students fighting and fist pumping, we should have some true reality shows that are influential that will help build the better/more educated people of tomorrow. When we hear about poverty in other countries and in the US, we never really think that lack of information is also a form of poverty. If we continue to throw this important information in the background, we are only hurting ourselves.
