My name is Danielle Shai and I am from Springfield, New Jersey. I am currently a senior chemistry major at Binghamton University and I will be attending dental school next year. Why is a chemistry major taking this course? To be perfectly honest, I need a "G" gen-ed however, I could have spared the great expense of a winter course and taken a class during the fall or spring semester but I wanted a class that was interesting and relatable, something I wanted to learn about instead of being forced to learn about, especially this being my last semester of college.
I'm fascinated by sites like Facebook and Twitter, which were once nothing, but now they are surely part of many people's daily routines, as routine as brushing your teeth (maybe even more for some people!). Everyone has a Facebook these days, from ten year old children to parents to grandparents to my dentist's office (to keep with the teeth theme). Although I am extremely familiar with the social networks like most of us probably are, this merely means I can navigate them with my eyes closed; I do not know about the information flow of them and the other global media networks, about their role all over the world (except that they exist) and I am interested to learn more.
I am excited to stray from my usual science classes, where I learn material that I know I will never use again, and delve deeper into the global media network that surrounds us and which we utilize daily.
